If you had an account with Recology in San Francisco at any time between July 1, 2017, and March 31, 2021, you may be entitled to a payment. Please see below for information on payments as of May 3, 2022. Please contact us at 1-415-330-1300 or customerservice@recologysf.com with any questions.

  1. How will I receive payment?

If you are an active Recology customer and did not negotiate your check, a credit has automatically been applied to your account. All credits were posted to accounts on April 18, 2022, and you should have received confirmation of your credit in the mail. For questions about your Recology account, please call Recology Customer Service directly at 1-415-330-1300 or email customerservice@recologysf.com.

If you are no longer a Recology customer and did not negotiate your check, please contact Recology Customer Service at 1-415-330-1300 or customerservice@recologysf.com to request a check reissue. Checks will be reissued on May 20, 2022.

  2. I was previously mailed a check from Recology. Can I still cash it?

No. As of March 23, 2022, all outstanding checks have been voided. Please contact us at 1-415-330-1300 or customerservice@recologysf.com for more information.

  3. Is my payment taxable income to me / Why did I receive a 1099 form?

The interest portion of your payment may be taxable income to you, and if you are required to file an income tax return for the year you received your payment, you may be required to report the interest on your tax return. Please save your payment letter with your tax return as documentation. If your interest is greater than $600, or you were subject to backup withholding, you will be mailed a Form 1099-INT indicating the taxable interest amount and any tax withholding.

If you have any questions about reporting this refund on your individual tax return, please contact your tax advisor.

  4. Why does my 1099/tax form show that federal income tax was withheld?

If we did not have a valid SSN/TIN or W-9 on record at the time the payment was issued, we were required to withhold a portion of the taxable payment and provide it to the IRS.

  5. I just received a 1099/tax form but I already filed my taxes.

We are unable to provide tax advice. We recommend you seek the advice of a professional tax consultant for assistance with how to proceed.

  6. Why did I receive a notice?

Recology’s records indicate that you had an account with Recology in San Francisco between July 1, 2017, and March 31, 2021, and may qualify to receive payment.

  7. Who is eligible to receive a payment?

Customers who had an account with Recology in San Francisco at any time between July 1, 2017, and March 31, 2021, may be entitled to a payment.

  8. Will taxes be deducted from any refund paid to me?

No, any tax liability is the responsibility of the individual receiving the payment. We do not offer any opinion or advice on whether a particular payment is taxable income.

  9. How was my payment amount calculated?

If you received bills directly from Recology for refuse collection services at any point between July 2017 and March 2021, your payment is calculated by adding:

    1. The amount Recology charged you during this period for your regularly-scheduled refuse collection services for each month, multiplied by the applicable payment percentage; and
    2. Interest.
